After Care Instruction

After Your Tooth Extraction

​

Bleeding

  1. Remove gauze from your mouth after 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace gauze over wound and bite firmly for 15 minutes. Repeat if necessary.

  2. Do not eat, sleep or drink with gauze in your mouth.

  3. Slight bleeding may continue for 24 hours or so. This is not unusual and do not panic.

  4. Do not rinse or swish vigorously for the first 24 hours.

  5. Do not spit for 24 hours.

 

Nutrition

  1. Maintaining an adequate diet after procedure is essential.

  2. Do not eat, sleep or drink with gauze in your mouth.

  3. You may go on a soft diet initially and keep your mouth clean by brushing and rinsing gently after meals.

 

Swelling

  1. Should there be swelling, ice pack may be placed outside the face, over area of surgery; 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off on the first day.

Precautions

  1. Get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activity for a few days. We advise that you to relax and rest more.

  2. If you are a smoker, remember that smoke is an irritant to healing tissue and will delay your healing.

 

 

After Your Wisdom Tooth Removal Or Implant Surgery

Bleeding

  1. Slight bleeding may continue for 24 hours or so. This is not unusual and do not panic.

  2. Do not rinse or swish vigorously for the first 24 hours.

  3. Do not spit for 24 hours.

  4. If you are concerned with bleeding please call the office.

 

Swelling

  1. You can expect some swelling following your surgery and it may take 3-4 days before it reaches its maximum.

  2. To help alleviate this ice packs may be placed outside of the face over the area of surgery. 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off on the first day.

 

Oral hygiene

  1. Avoid brushing the surgical area for the first 24 hours, but remember the remainder of your mouth should remain clean.

 

Discomfort

  1. The amount of pain or discomfort varies from patient to patient and the medication given to you should be used as prescribed and should control your discomfort.

 

Nutrition​

  1. Maintaining an adequate diet after surgery is essential.

  2. You may eat food you desire, but it is easier to favour soft food that you can eat on the opposite side of mouth.

  3. Fluids : Fluid intake is important. Try to take 8 glasses per day. This can ensure you're hydrated throughout the day.

  2. If you are a smoker, remember that smoke is an irritant to healing tissue and will delay your healing.

After Your Root Canal Treatment

​

Pain management

  1. Some tenderness is normal for a few days. Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen together with Paracetamol as directed.

​

Chewing precautions

  1. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until a permanent filling or crown is placed. This prevents damage to the temporary filling.

  2. Stick to soft food and avoid hard, or very hot/cold food that could irritate the area.

​

Oral hygiene

  1. Continue brushing as per usual but be gentle around the treated tooth.

 

Discomfort

  1. The amount of pain or discomfort varies from patient to patient. The medication given to you should be used as prescribed and should control your discomfort.

  2. Contact your dentist if you experience severe pain lasting beyond 2-3 days, swelling, broken temporary filling.

Follow up

Follow up care is utmost important and should be done yearly to monitor the healing progress. It is essential to complete the treatment by placing a permanent filling or crown to protect the root canal treated tooth.
